First off if you want a good experience with this type of python buy a CB baby from a good set of parents. Average size on the retic all depends on it's locality. Mainland species average 17-27ft in length, while retics from Jampea and Kayuadi are only 9-12ft on average still not a small snake but then you have the super dwarfs found in the Lesser Sunda Islands that will max out at 6-8ft!

Retics can with proper care live into their late 20's to early 30's.

Color & pattern mutations of the reticulated python include T- albino, T+ albino, Tiger, Super Tiger, Albino Tiger, Calico, Calico Tiger, Striped, Patternless, Axanthic/Anerythristic, Hypomelanistic, Granite-back, and more!

This snake is NOT a beginner snake by any means you should have a few years of large boid experience before attempting these monsters (even the super dwarfs can and will hurt you)

Hatchlings come out of the egg at about 24". Females can grow in excess of 17' while the males are much shorter at 12'-14'.

=== Lifespan ===
 +
Retics can with proper care live into their late 20's to early 30's.
 +

 +
=== Handling ===
 +
They must be handled carefully, and when large always remember to have a partner

== Housing ==
The size enclosure you will need for an adult retic will be at least 6ft long x 3ft wide x 2ft high.

They need to be kept at a temp of 80-90F (90 being the basking area) with a humidity of around 50-70%.

=== Substrate ===
Bedding can be anything you want as long as it is not CEDAR, THIS WILL KILL YOUR REPTILES!

I use cypress mulch and newspaper. Retics as with most all snakes do not require any special lighting, but if you want a light in your cage use a 12/12 cycle meaning 12hrs on and 12hrs off.

-
I shouldn't have to say this but always make sure they have FRESH water and a bowl big enough to soak in if your humidity is low.

=== Humidity ===
 +
Humidity should be around 50-70%. There's a couple of ways to accomplish this.
 +

 +
*1. You can use a safe mulch substrate and keep it moist. When the wood begins to dry out you can use this as an indicator to mist it down again.
 +
*2. Use newspaper (especially good if you need to start feeding in the enclosure) and make a humid hide using a tote filled with something such as sphagnum moss or angel moss.
 +

 +
Remember to clean the hide out regularly and replace the medium used to avoid bacteria build-up.

=== Lighting ===
 +
Special lighting is not necessary for this nocturnal snake. A photoperiod using the light from a window in the room is acceptable. If there are no windows then using an indirect light source on a timer, such as a lamp on a 12/12 timer cycle will work.

== Feeding ==

=== Diet ===
Try not to feed your retic a meal that is too large, a good rule I follow is if you are feeding a large item to the snake make it at least the size of the thickest part of the snakes body, up to twice the size. Always provide a hide box as this will help keep your retic calm and handelable.

=== Breeding ===
NOTE: Prior to attempting any breeding with your reticulated pythons, make sure you are 100% certain of the gender of each snake! NEVER introduce two mature male retics into the same enclosure, as they are highly combative to the point of severely injuring or killing one another!

Maturity in retics occurs at lengths of 7 - 9' (males) & 11'+ (females). The breeding season in captivity is OCT-MAR. during this time STOP ALL FEEDING your animals should be well above normal in weight almost fat, if they are not don't even think about breeding you will kill the female! Let the night time temps drop into the low 70's and put the female into the males cage, misting the animals can help. Leave her in there for a couple weeks and watch for couplelation, and ovulation swelling. The female will shed 14-21 days after ovulation and eggs are typically laid within 34 - 49 (average 38) days. the size of the clutch depends on the size of the female and if this is her first time or not giving birth, but typicaly is around 20-80 eggs.
