Corn snakes are often found in forest areas, rocky hillsides, and farm land throughout most of the Eastern and central United States. The best time to find a corn snake outside is during dawn and dusk, as this is the point when they are most active. These snakes are mostly ground-dwellers, but can sometimes be seen as semi-arboreal. They come in a wide range of colors. These snakes are generally 3 to 5 feet in length, and live up to (and sometimes passing) 20 years.

== Housing ==
== Housing ==
Corn Snakes should be housed in a minimum a 20 gallon aquarium with a secure top. This top needs to either lock on or have some type of reinforcement in order to keep the snake in. Snakes will look for the smallest holes and are great escapees. An enclosure should also be given for the snake as a way to hide from things surrounding it.

=== Substrate ===
There are several choices for substrate. One of the commonly used ones, and easily accessible, is newspaper. This is very each to clean, but doesn't always look as nice.  Aspen chips can also be used, as well as astroturf and indoor/outdoor carpet. Make sure to never use cedar, as it is considered toxic. Remember to clean the substrate once you notice any feces or anything else on it. This will keep the snake in a healthy environment and help prevent diseases.

=== Temperature ===
The best way to keep up with heat is via an under tank heater. These can be purchased at any pet store, but you should purchase a controller as well. A corn snake needs a temperature between 75-85F, and a UTH gets up to 100F. A controller will be able to help keep the temperature down. Heat rocks should also never be used as they can burn a reptile.
