Hi All! I'm new to this forum but not new to reptile keeping. I'm really excited to have found other enthusiasts. I love seeing photos and sharing information. Here's some of my wonderful scaly friends.

Nice looking collection! Look at all of those little faces! I see you have a 'bump-on-a-log' skink, as I like to call them (I love those!).
I hope you enjoy this forum as much as I have!
Off the subject for a sec:
Here's something funny. The spell checker came up with campanology as a spelling suggestion for bump-on-a-log...
Campanology??? Wazzatt???

What great faces!! I love that the veiled is actually looking very comfortable out of it's enclosure and in a window sill!! Mine may never get that comfy. He's a real chicken. The female has good potential. The skink doesn't even look real. It's always nice to see such healthy looking animals. Besides the rescued boa (Karma) Seth has - everyone has fantastic looking animals... ;D ...although I think Karma has made MUCH improvement since he first got her!

My skink is a character. He has a hide box that he protects fiercely and you can hear him huffing whenever you walk by. I occasionally stop and have a huff war with him. The cresties are the newest additions and I'm finding them lots of fun to watch. They don't walk anywhere - they 'boing.' That's how they got their names, Oingo and Boingo.

I know!!! The forum has become so active that it's hard to keep up with all the posts. I always stay up late reading things because I can't convince myself to go to bed. Then I kick myself the next day for doing that.
I'm a natural night owl. Besides, all I have to do is get the boys off to school in the morning and I can take a nap ;D which I generally don't do anyhow. I seem to survive on 4 or 5 hours of sleep a night.

Thank you all for such a nice welcome to me and my scale babies! I look forward to getting to know you and your 'owners.' ;) I've kept reptiles since I was a child visiting Palm Springs on the weekends. My first encounter was with a chuckwalla that really liked me - well it liked the webbing between my thumb and forefinger... I ran home with it firmly attached to my hand and proceeded to brag about 'catching' my first lizard. It was love at first sight and I haven't looked back.

LOL...that's very funny. I had once "wore" a set of alligator lizard earrings when I was about 8 or 9. If anyone knows this lizard - it is a guaranteed biter!! They've bitten fingers often enough to know they smart - but didn't hurt - until you tried to take them off your ear lobe... ::)

You know you are only the second person i have heard this story from. My mom told me she won a pair of the live earings from a fair as a kid, and when she took them off they crawled under the house. I didn't belive her as a kid, but i would love to see those now!

She's about 7 months old. My son was out with a friend and they saw her in the middle of a busy street. They scooped her up and brought her to me. She was newly hatched and absolutely adorable! I'm usually not big on keeping wild caught animals and I may still release her in the spring. I just wanted her to have a good chance and that wasn't going to happen if she stayed in that street! She spends most of the day trying to escape the enclosure and has succeeded twice. I let my corn out regularly to prowl and he wrapped himself around her cage once. It was soooo funny watching her stalk this snake that was at least 3 to 4 times her size!!!

Well I was going to take some updated photos of my albino corn...unfortunately she's escaped her enclosure! Thankfully she's big enough now that there aren't too many places she can hide (I hope!) or get out (I really hope!!!). She's a rescue and has a small kink in her spine but you can't see it and can barely feel it. She's a sweetie and I have a feeling I may not see her until spring! She's probably found some nice cozy dark place to hole up until warmer weather...

I would be ripping apart the house! As a matter of fact - earlier this week the hognose got out. I keep the floor registers closed - which is a VERY good thing. After about 20 mins - I found her curled up in the one under the cham cage.
Have you thought of setting up a basking light on the floor with a box hide under it somewhere close to the cage? They often don't travel too far when it's so cool.
heart4herps
01-19-2008, 02:23 PM
I've set up some hide boxes along the walls. Thankfully the heat/AC registers are on the ceiling where they can't be reached. I've had my son lifting and moving furniture but so far nothing.

My RTB sneaks out sometimes. I rarely find her outside of the room when she does, no matter what time of year.

01-19-2008, 06:05 PM
I'm not too worried. This has happened so many times over the years and they always turn up unharmed and seemingly very pleased with themselves. My okeetee corn got into our storage closet and wound himself throughout a hand-knitted winter blanket. My son got the scare of a lifetime when he took the blanket down and shook it out only to have a snake come flying out. ;D

Um, just a question, am I the only person here who has never had a pet escape? Total of about ten years with various snakes, and I have yet to have one leave its enclosure, unless I let it. Not saying you guys are bad at it or anything, just wondering if I have been really lucky.

More often than not I've been responsible for my snakes getting out - accidentally leaving the lid of the cage open or forgetting to lock it. Or not paying close enough attention when they're out roaming. In this instance I forgot to lock the cage AND didn't close it enough for the latch to 'catch.' It's very upsetting the first couple of times it happens but at this point I know she'll show up soon. This is a new (2 years old) house and it's built like a fortress! Right after moving in I "snake proofed" the house as best I could. And she's big enough that the places she can hide are narrowed down significantly. I'm confident we'll find her soon or else she'll show up when she gets hungry. She's a ravenous eater so she won't be in hiding for too long!
MrsWTownsend
01-19-2008, 06:38 PM
I probably shouldn't admit this, but when I got my BRB, she escaped her enclosure the very first night! I hadn't even had her a full 24 hours yet and I wasn't about to tell my husband how much I had just paid for her after losing her! I was freaking out ! I found her coming out from under the dishwasher a full week later to drink from the dogs water, which was within 4' of where she escaped from.
I snagged her, got her back in that tank & checked her all out and put like 30 lbs of rocks on the lid to her tank. Damned if she didn't get out again that very night but lucky for me she was hungry, having not eaten in a week. She climbed herself up into the table top and into the rats cage and tried to catch a full grown rat that next day (keeping in mind that she's not much thicker than a pencil at this point and maybe 1 1/2' long).
I learned about locking lids because of Naga and she's been secured ever since. The CRT's enclosure has hinged doors in the front and sometimes Amber remembers she can push her way out through those if she really makes an effort.

One of the rats actually had a permanent tear in her ear from Naga biting it. Fortunately, the rat was chill and I got there before she killed my sneaky snake.
Naga was almost named Houdini.

LOL - ewwwww!!!
My ball python was such an escape artist that i Velcro taped the WHOLE lid of the tank. The dang thing still got out with weights on top and everything! She couldn't resist sleeping under the couch cushions.
I have seen my Kenyan trying to escape. Luckily hes still pretty small. I think if he did end up getting out, my cats would eat him as a snack :-[
heart4herps
01-25-2008, 02:22 PM
I can't keep anything with dander anymore but when we had cats, they were terrified of my reptiles!!! The black cat would get up on her hind paws to peer into the tank and if you came up and spoke or touched her, she would leap about 5 feet in the air and hit the ground running!!! It was hysterical! I don't think I'd have to worry about anything getting eaten except maybe one of the snakes eating the cats... ;D
Thankfully I snake-proofed this place pretty well when we moved in because I like to let them roam. My albino corn got out last weekend and I found her last night in the couch cushions! We'd gone to bed and I came out around 11:30, turned on the light and caught her! It was so funny - her head was just showing above the crack of the cushion and she froze instantly hoping I wouldn't see her. Of course it's hard to miss that little white head against a dark brown background... I swear she looked sheepish. Anyway it was back into her cage with a new lock and a huge heavy book (the atlas of snakes of the world) on top!

My sav is the biggest chicken!!! He won't do his business in his enclosure so I take him out when he demands attention and put him on his lease. Normally he likes to stay outside for awhile unless it's windy then he gets freaked out and comes clawing at the door. I love this shot because by the time I got to him, he was halfway up the screen!
