If you don't have access to purified water you can leave tap water out for a day or so and you have water that is safe for heps (not the disease).

Leaving tap water sitting out lets the chlorine dissipate. However it does nothing for the impurities in water such as ammonia, nitrate, phosphate, etc. I just wanted to make sure that was understood. Yes the water is fine for reptiles.

It was not until I set up a saltwater fish tank did I realize all the crap in the water. The city water where I live was around 400 TDS (total dissolved solids). The first tank we setup was with dechlorinated tap water. What a mess that was trying to keep the water parameters in check. The corals didn't grow much either.

You can get an RO (reverse process) unit to produce water that is 97-98% pure. It has pre-filters to remove sediment and chlorine. The RO membrane is where water is forced under pressure through pores small enough to only let pure water through. This is a slow process of usually 50-100GPD. The process was originally used by the military to remove the salt from water so they could drink it. This water is safe to drink

If you want 99% pure water an RO/DI unit is the way to do. The DI (de-ionization) process uses a bed of resin to attract whatever positive and negative particles are in the water. However you probably shouldn't drink this water in large amounts. I've read that because it is so pure it will actually dehydrate you. This is the water I use for our saltwater tank now. It is amazing how easy it is to care for the tank with the correct water.

You mean "safe for herps" ...and the STD is spelled herpes.

Tap water is still safe for herps to drink...even without letting the water sit out for the chlorine to dissipate. There are some of the more sensitive species of amphibs you would want more purified water for, but reptiles are pretty hardy.

I ment mostly for ampibions because they arent as hardy as reptils of course then I could have put it into the amphibion file but I want thinking ;D

Ryan spent the time to add spell check to the forum's interface. Click the button when you are done typing so that readers can understand what you are trying to say. Thanks.
