There's a major glitch in my system that causes me to pick up and take home wild animals whenever the opertunity presents itself. I was out walking my dogs this morning and scared a momma 'possum with young out from behind the garbage cans. She left in a hurry, and when she did a young female slipped off. Needless to say she's now in an old tri level ferret cage I had in the dungeon/basement/critter room.

What, Takin' in warm bloodeds :o or just takin' in crazed animals in general? I fully intend to release her if she stresses and possums, at least adults that I've delt with, don't take to captivity well AT ALL. This one is about five months old so may well be past being able to tame.

just joking, I like warm-bloods too.

All the possie babies I've rehabbed still had their eyes closed. Is your possie 5 months OOP (Out Of Pouch) or is this still in-pouch included. Of course, the younger they are the better they take to being fondled by us fur-less things... ;D

If you think it's still on formula then KMR - or even better - Esbilac will be your choice of feeding. And then all the berries, chicken, scrambled eggs, yogurt, etc. I have a possie care package at home that gives all the juicy info on caring for these orphans... ;)

I'm figuring five months total. She's about the size of a large rat. If I had ta guesstimate, she wouldn't hold still for a weight on a scale ;). she's in the 200-300 gram weight. I quartered up a tater, put some lab blocks in, and some crickets, minus the back legs, in a bowl. We'll see how it goes.

BTW...we seem to have the same glitch... ::)

I've had good luck weighing the wriggly ones by taring out a small glad box with the lid loosely on it. Keeps the beastie from climbing out over the sides...lol. My guys LOVED hunting the crix! The really liked the meal worms, too.

If I haven't mentioned it in here already, I'll tell you about my experience with turtles sometime ;D

Upate and a pic of "Daisy Mae" :) She seems to be settling in well, at least till I used the flash to get the pic :o. Likes apples, the lab blocks and mice :o. Now to gain her trust ;)

If she warms up to me at all it'll be because of mice and crickets. She LOVES them both and will come up and snatch em right out of my hand, but then she goes to the nearest corner. Might have to get a pair of leather gloves and just start trying to handle her. We'll just wait and see.

We had an old dryer out on the back porch for awhile. Fed the cats there....and eventually one possie girl. She was a full adult and big! She would growl...but continue to eat. We had a giant nylon toothbrush-looking thing (for what it was for...I don't even know... ??? ) I would touch her with. She would his and gape and look as menacing as she could...but didn't leave the cat food. After about 4 days she stopped carrying on and even closed her eyes for a good scritch... ;D. Hopefully with hands-on she'll warm up faster.

She does know when it's time to eat. She'll be waiting for me on the food dish when I go to the basement ;D. The unfortunate part is most of the interacting will have to be after sunset, and if it eventually works out well I'll never get any sleep ;)

The first three pics are from one litter and the last two are a different litter. The released ones in the link are from the first litter.

Wow that's a lot of possies. They are cute in a odd sort of way.

P.S...That is NOT pee on my shoulder. It was bath time which was after every feeding. You have NO idea what kind of mess babies make when they start eating on their own!

First foods mixed with formula.

No more formula, but moistened with water.

Those pics were great. I liked the cage set up. The close up of you syringe feeding the baby, he looks like a little monkey ;D

its sort of weird how these little guys are kinda cute... and just last month one of these scared the cr** outta me when I turn around to see a cat halfway up the screen door to thw back porch (climbing) and one of these snooping around outside the door... although the sound of the cazt pouncing on the screen door may have been what scared me :) hard to say :D

The one with me sitting on the floor? The little brown bear looking animal? That would be Thor. We were also bottle feeding two puppies at the time. He was about 4 weeks old there...and had them since they were two weeks old. Mom was hit by a car and the city kill shelter didn't have time to feed them. Out of 5 puppies...only two survived...and we still have Thor over 3 years later...:-) In the post where I show all the beasties...he is the Tennessee mountain cur.

They get released when they're old enough... ;).

They hung on like little monkeys, too. There little hands just wrap around the syringe, your finger, etc...and their tails hold on pretty well, too.... ;D.

I love the rehabbing part most out of keeping animals. It's so rewarding when things go right. If I could quit work I would do this all the time... ;D

Wouldn't that be nice....*sigh*
Is it odd that i go home on lunch to check on my babies even though i know they're perfectly fine? Lol. DH thinks I'm crazy :P
